Dubrovnik planning hydroplane connections to islandsDubrovnik, Split, Zadar, Rijeka, Sibenik, Hvar

Dubrovnik could soon be connected with the islands in Dubrovnik-Neretva County by hydroplane, deputy prefect Davorko Obuljen said on Saturday, adding that negotiations on the project had been under way with the German company European Coastal Airlines (ECA) for more than a year.

The southern Adriatic resort would be connected with Lastovo, Korcula and Mljet. The issue of development permits is nearing completion for the first two.

However, the town authorities and ECA have not yet agreed on the landing and takeoff location in Dubrovnik, so a meeting will be convened with the Croatian construction minister.

ECA has already set up a Croatian company for hydroplane connections along the Croatian coast and has been working on the project for about ten years. It would cover Dubrovnik, Split, Zadar, Rijeka, Sibenik, Hvar and other coastal towns and islands. The project is worth EUR 34 million.

Hydroplanes were present in the Dubrovnik area in the last century, especially between the two world wars. More info
